| Lovespirals http://lovespirals.com Lovespirals began in late 1998 as an outgrowth of Love Spirals Downwards, the legendary dream pop recording project of multi-instrumentalist, Ryan Lum. Lum became immersed in the San Francisco drum 'n' bass DJ scene, and soon found himself collaborating with sultry vocalist, Anji Bee, as well as Doron Orenstein and Gabriel D. Vine (of Subliminal Records duo, Monkey Bars). After a series of jazzy D’n’B singles released on comps alongside the likes of LTJ Bukem, Lovespirals explored their love of jazz, blues, world, and rock music for their moody 2002 debut CD, Windblown Kiss. The duo followed up in 2005 with a sensual blend of their electronica and rock influences on Free & Easy, the first CD for the band’s own label, Chillcuts. Lum had previously been signed to indie label Projekt Records -- since 1992! -- and though their relationship remains strong, it was time for something new. Lovespirals' music has been featured on MTV, VH1, E!TV, ABC, the EW Network, and many other televison and cable channels internationally. The band launched their own podcast, Chillin’ with Lovespirals, in 2005 and in early 2006, Bee began a proudcing weekly podsafe music show Adam Curry's PodShow Podcast Network called The Chillcast with Anji Bee. - (Read more) |
| Mad Larry http://www.madlarry.com/ Taking influences from a wide range of artists such as Tom Waits, Talking Heads, The Platters, and Neil Young, Mad Larry will soon release its namesake EP. No doubt, the band's fans' overwhelming enthusiasm is connected to band members' past work as The Bogmen. Mad Larry is former Bogmen Bill Ryan (guitarist/lyricist), Brendan Ryan (keyboardist/lyricist), PJ O'Connor (drums), and Mark Wike (bass). Since the breakup of The Bogmen in 1999, all these musicians have pursued a wide range of separate projects, but have kept crossing paths along the way. Guitarist/lyricist Bill Ryan leads Mad Larry's sound with his hooky yet off-beat style. His melodic guitar-lines and rhythms, with vocals that fluctuate between crooning and quavering, have resonance of Velvet Underground-meets-Radiohead. His brother Brendan Ryan's distinctive use of processed Rhodes, piano, Hammond, and samplers provides an unrefined electronica sound in keeping with the spirit of rock-n-roll. Mark Wike combines his foundation as a rock bass player with his experience as a music supervisor/composer, with trip-hop rhythm and the feedback overtones of World Music. Percussion player of dance/punk act Radio4, PJ O'Connor also plays drums for Mad Larry. By infusing various percussive styles with the more conventional trap-kit, PJ gives the band a sound often compared to Wilco and Tom Waits' Frank's Wild Years. In a Samuel Beckett kind of way, Mad Larry often sings about finding hope and serenity in the midst of the absurdities and tribulations of the wayward world. Confessing flaws, compulsions, indulgences, and failed relationships, Mad Larry writes and plays about the frailties of artists and all of us. There's nothing egotistical or presumptuous here. The band can be as intimate as a Johnny Cash ballad or as rambunctious and bizzare as David Bowie's Alladin Sane. Mad Larry is a "must listen." - (Read more) |
